Emmerich on the Rhine (city rights since 1233), located in the middle of the Lower Rhine plain, is the first German city beyond the Dutch border and certainly worth a visit and stay.
As a member of the Hanseatic League, it experienced its first heyday in the 14th and 15th centuries.
Of course, the Rhine is still important to the city today – and not just because of shipping. Emmerich has much to offer both as a business location and in the areas of tourism and culture.
Situated directly on the Rhine, the city of 30,000 inhabitants is considered by many companies to be an ideal location with its container port and immediate proximity to the Netherlands, but also due to its optimal connection to the Ruhr region.
Together with neighbors and locals, visitors experience a wide range of cultural and tourist diversity as well as attractive leisure activities. From bicycle tours and boat trips in the surrounding area, city tours, exhibitions to museums, theater and gastronomy – there is something for every taste.
The newly designed Rhine promenade with its gastronomic mile invites you to linger. From here you have an unobstructed view of the longest suspension bridge in Germany. Also the passenger ships “Stadt Emmerich” and “Rheinkönigin” start here for their convivial round trips.
On the other hand, visitors will find relaxation and tranquility in the surrounding typical Lower Rhine meadow, field and forest landscape.
Like so many German cities, Emmerich was badly damaged during World War II.
Fortunately, however, some historic buildings were preserved: St. Martin’s Church, for example, which is located directly on the river, and also St. Aldegundis Church with its late medieval sculptures.
Architecturally very interesting is the Holy Spirit Church, which is also considered by experts to be an extraordinary sacral building.
Other attractions are considered to be the small but fine Rhine Museum, the Poster Museum, the Coffee Technology Museums and the interesting photo collection in the Municipal Theater.
